Once perceived as unreliable, cheap and the work of amateur software developers, open source has emerged as an attractive option for a host of companies. But are the benefits of open source worth the risks?
“Open source software has a strong place in the software world and has provided many great gains to the industry,” stated Kareem Tawansi, CEO of software development provider, Solentive Software. “It has also provided alternative business models for software developers to generate notoriety and income.”
“In the enterprise, open source plays a variety of roles and is often utilised in different ways,” continued Kareem.
“Its main advantages centre around the lower cost of initial implementation and, often, the higher availability of add-ons and 3rd party plug-ins. However, many enterprises may prefer the peace of mind associated with instant and reliable support that often comes with licensed software, that does not feature in the open source model.”
