Shared Printers across Windows Vista and Windows XP  [click for more...]

Since getting a shiny new machine running Vista, I'd been having a bit of grief trying to get it to print to my Canon i6500 printer shared through another Windows XP machine. Vista has built-in support for the printer (running locally), but when trying to add it across a network, as the XP machine could not supply the correct 64bit Vista drivers, the Vista machine wasn't too happy - pointing to the correct location of the local device drivers didn't help either!

After sifting through various solutions - this was the one that worked for me.

On the Vista machine,

- Choose to add a local printer
- Create a new local port, and set its name so it matches the network share (\\server\name)
- Manually select the appropriate printer driver from the automatically supported set (or select an appropriate vista driver)

This then tricks Vista into thinking we have a local printer - so it can install the correct drivers - that actually redirects to the network printer.

I think this should work in the reverse direction too, if Windows XP is geting upset printing to a device shared through Vista.

Hope this helps someone!

MSIL - the language of the CLR (Part 3)  [click for more...]

I have just posted the 3rd and final part of this miniseries about MSIL on Channel8, links below.

If I were to trust the view stats on C8 then this series has been the most popular stuff that has ever gone up on there, surprisingly more popular than videos with the likes of Brian Beckman!  Crazy!

I hope at least a handful of people have enjoyed this little series on MSIL :-)

View it - MSIL - the language of the CLR (Part 3).

Another minor C#/C++ difference - adding existing files  [click for more...]

Another minor detail that bit me for a few minutes today. I'm posting this so I'll see it and remember, and possibly lodge it in other people's consciousness.

Using Visual Studio 2005, adding an existing .cs file to a C# project will cause a copy of that file to be created in the project directory. If I want to link to the original file, I need to explicitly choose Add As Link from the dropdown on the Add button.

C++ projects, however, have the opposite behavior. Adding an existing item in a different folder will add a link to the original file in the original location. To create a copy, manually copy it to the project dir.

That is all.

Important Information regarding Visual Studios 2008 Beta 2  [click for more...]

We know many of you have been testing the Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 VPC images, http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/default.aspx.  It has been brought to our attention that the current Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 VPC images will expire on November 1, 2007, rather than March 15, 2008 as originally announced.  It is strongly encouraged that you take all necessary steps before November 1, 2007 to back up all your projects and move your Team Foundation Server data to an alternate location.  For instructions on moving your TFS data please refer to the article Moving Team Foundation Server, http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms404879(vs.90).aspx, located on the MSDN Library.

REQUEST: As this change impacts many members of the community, assistance you can provide spreading the word is greatly appreciated.  So please share this information with the community any where you see fit – blogs, web sites, user groups, newsletters, etc.

For the latest information and up to date information on this please refer to the Visual Studio Developer Center, http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/default.aspx

A short Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) is listed below:

FAQQ. Will my data be available after November 1, 2007?

A. This is still being researched, however, currently the understanding is that customers will NOT be able to access their date after November 1st unless the data is moved to an alternate installation location.

 Q. Can I reset my system date to re-enable the OS image?

A. Again there is still research being done, however, from the current understanding of the problem resetting the system date back DOES NOT re-enable the OS image.

If we have any further information to share will be sure to let you know.

Thank you for helping us spread the word.
